Retinol 101: How to Start Without the Irritation
· 5 min read

Retinol has a reputation for two things: real results, and real irritation. The redness and flaking that scare people off are almost always a sign of starting too fast, not a sign that retinol is wrong for you. Here is how to ease in and let your skin adjust.
What retinol does
Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It supports your skin's natural renewal, which over time helps soften the look of fine lines, smooth texture, and even out tone. It is one of the most studied ingredients in skincare, which is exactly why it is worth using correctly.
Start low and slow
The biggest mistake is using retinol every night from day one. Instead, start two to three nights a week and build up gradually as your skin tolerates it. Our VitAFix Retinol Renewal Cream uses an encapsulated, slow-release 1% retinol designed to be gentler on the skin, but even a comfortable formula deserves a slow start.
Night only, and always SPF
Use retinol at night, never in the morning. It can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable while you use it. Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin, and avoid the immediate eye area.
What not to mix
On the nights you use retinol, skip other strong actives. In particular, do not layer it with Vitamin C or exfoliating acids on the same night, as that combination is a fast track to irritation. Save your Vitamin C serum for the morning instead.
If your skin reacts
A little dryness as you adjust is normal. If you get real redness, stinging, or flaking, space out your applications and let your skin recover, and support it with a gentle moisturizer like Calm Aura. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor before using any retinol product.
