In What Order? How to Layer Your Skincare

· 4 min read

You can own all the right products and still not see results, simply because they are going on in the wrong order. The good news is that layering follows one easy rule, and once it clicks, your whole routine makes more sense.

The rule: thinnest to thickest

As a general guide, apply your products from lightest texture to richest. Water-like formulas go first so they can absorb, and heavier creams and oils go last so they can seal everything in. Our products use a simple Step 1 to 4 system on the label to make this even easier to follow.

The order, step by step

Here is a routine that works for most skin:

  • Cleanser: always first, on damp skin. Try FreshPrep Foaming Cleanser.
  • Mist or toner: a quick layer of hydration after cleansing, like Ocean Mist or Vine Dew.
  • Serums and treatments: thinnest first. A Vitamin C or LineSilk serum, for example. If you use more than one, pause a moment between each.
  • Eye cream: gently tapped around the eye area, like EyeLuxe.
  • Moisturizer and face oil: lock everything in. A cream like HydraBalm or Calm Aura is the final skincare step at night. Our face oils, such as Age Well, are made to layer under a moisturizer or be used on their own, so follow the directions on each one.
  • SPF: a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, the final morning step, every day.

A few simple rules

Give each layer a few seconds to absorb before the next. Use lighter formulas in the morning and save your richest creams for night. And keep strong actives apart: as a rule, use Vitamin C in the morning and a retinol like VitAFix at night, not together. When in doubt, the directions on each product always win.
